Shitanyu Lakeside Open-Air Bath

下ん湯

Oita · Kyushu

A rustic, thatched-roof public bathhouse sitting directly on the shore of Lake Kinrin, with two small gender-mixed honesty-box-payment pools and an open-air rear section facing the lake and forest — one of the last old-style communal onsen still open to tourists in the town center.

Why it's hidden

A rustic thatched bathhouse standing metres from Kinrin Lake, one of Yufuin's most distinctive baths — yet most visitors walk the lakeside path straight past it without realising they can go in.
