A small spring-and-hot-spring-fed lake at the foot of Mount Yufu, named in 1884 by a Confucian scholar who saw fish scales flash gold in the sunset light. A stone torii belonging to the lakeside Tenso Shrine rises directly from the water, and warm spring water often produces morning fog on cold mornings. Best timed for late autumn to winter (Nov-Feb) mornings for mist; cherry blossoms in spring.
