Sayuri Sand Bath (Yamakawa, Ibusuki)

指宿砂むし温泉

Kagoshima · Kyushu

This is the Yamakawa sand bath — 山川砂むし温泉「砂湯里」(Sayuri) — on the coast at Yamakawa-Fukumoto, south of central Ibusuki, not the larger Saraku hall in the town itself. Visitors are buried in naturally heated black volcanic sand a few metres from the shoreline, in a small open-air setting beside the sea, and the geothermal steam that heats the sand rises from the beach around you.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers overlook this experience due to its remote location and the popularity of more conventional onsen.
