Kashiragashima Church

頭ヶ島天主堂

Nagasaki · Kyushu

A rare stone-built Catholic church (1910-1919) on a small island in the Goto chain, built by hand by a formerly-persecuted Kirishitan fishing community using sandstone quarried on the island itself. UNESCO World Heritage component.

Why we picked it

Genuinely remote and low-traffic; as of March 2026 the local bus route to the church was discontinued entirely; it's now reachable only by private/rental car (~20 min from Arikawa Port).
