Naka-dake Crater (Mount Aso Active Crater)

Access to Mount Aso's Naka-dake crater is frequently suspended and must be checked the same morning — as of July 2026 the crater rim is closed outright while a crashed sightseeing helicopter is recovered from inside it, with no reopening date announced, and Japan's Meteorological Agency has Aso at Volcanic Alert Level 2, barring entry within about 1 km of the vent. Even in normal times the rim closes at short notice when sulphur dioxide gas drifts the wrong way, and viewing is flatly prohibited for anyone with asthma, bronchial or heart conditions, or a pacemaker. When it is open, a toll road and a shuttle bus from Aso Sanjo Terminal climb to the rim of a steaming, milky-green crater lake — one of very few active vents on earth you can look straight down into.
