Kurokawa Onsen

黒川温泉

Kumamoto · Kyushu

Kurokawa Onsen is a hot-spring village in the Kumamoto mountains built around onsen-hopping: a single pass costing ¥1,500 for adults and ¥700 for children admits you to any three of the ryokan baths, which take non-staying visitors between 8:30 AM and 9:00 PM. There is no railway — it is roughly two hours by bus or car from Kumamoto, and about the same from Hakata. Autumn, when the valley turns, is the busiest season.

Why we picked it

Many mainstream travelers overlook Kurokawa Onsen in favor of more popular hot spring destinations like Beppu or Hakone.
