Mount Miyanoura (Yakushima)

宮之浦岳

Kagoshima · Kyushu

宮之浦岳 is the highest mountain in Kyushu at 1,936 m, and on Yakushima it is a full day rather than an outing: the town puts the round trip from the Yodogawa trailhead at nine to ten hours over about 8 km each way. The walk starts in forest and climbs out of it, and the last stretch crosses open yakuzasa bamboo grass strewn with granite boulders, where the summit is finally in sight. Getting to the start is its own problem — the trailhead car park holds five or six cars, and the alternative is a bus that runs twice a day to Kigen-sugi, half an hour's walk short of it. In winter the mountain takes several metres of snow and the access road can close.

Why we picked it

A named summit with a real trail, listed here so a walking day can be built around the climb itself rather than a viewpoint reached by road.
