Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell)

血の池地獄

Oita · Kyushu

Located in the Noda/Shibaseki district roughly 2km from the main Kannawa hells cluster, Chinoike Jigoku is Japan's oldest natural hot-spring hell, with a documented history of over 1,300 years. Its pond gets its vivid rust-red color from iron oxide and clay minerals dissolved in the 78°C water.

Why we picked it

Sits apart from the main walkable cluster of Beppu's hells, so visitors doing the hell circuit on foot often finish there and never make the short trip out to this blood-red pond.
