Kijimadake

杵島岳

Kumamoto · Kyushu

A grass-covered basalt pyroclastic cone, formed roughly 3,500 years ago, and the most accessible of the Aso Five Peaks, with a paved and well-maintained trail from the Kusasenri parking area reaching the summit crater rim in about 35-40 minutes. The summit loop circles an old crater and gives direct views down into the active Nakadake crater area to the east, plus the Kusasenri grassland below.

Why it's hidden

The easiest of the Five Peaks and open almost year-round, since it's farther from the active vent than Nakadake and rarely closed for volcanic-gas advisories — a genuine "beginner volcano hike" most guides bury under Nakadake's ropeway.
