Nagano · Chubu
The site of one of the four great checkpoints (sekisho) of Edo-period Japan, where Nakasendo travelers on the Kiso Road were inspected for weapons and the movement of women. A reconstructed barrier building and small museum on the original ground overlook the Kiso River in the post town of Kiso-Fukushima. The surrounding town also preserves the atmospheric Kami-no-dan old streets.
