Mount Rokko

六甲山

Hyogo · Kansai

六甲山 is not a peak but a long ridge standing directly above Kobe, close enough that the city begins at its foot and the sea is visible from most of it. Its highest point, at 931 m, is a plain earth clearing with a wooden marker post, reached in a few minutes from a road and a teahouse — the walking, not the summit, is the reason people come. The Rokko Visitor Centre publishes 22 marked courses across the ridge, from short loops near the cable-car station to the full traverse; the classic is the climb from Ashiyagawa through the Rock Garden. A cable car and, from Arima Onsen on the far side, a ropeway both carry visitors onto the ridge without walking at all, which is how most people arrive.

Why we picked it

A named summit with a real trail, listed here so a walking day can be built around the climb itself rather than a viewpoint reached by road.
