山上ヶ岳 is a 1,719 m peak in the Ōmine range that remains closed to women — the only mountain in Japan where that restriction still stands — and the 女人結界門 gates on its approaches mark exactly where the boundary begins. It is the birthplace of Shugendō: Ōminesan-ji sits at the top, and the rock ledges below it are working ascetic training grounds rather than viewpoints. The pilgrimage route up from Dorogawa is about 12 km there and back and takes roughly six hours on foot.
