Built in 1610 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a strategic stronghold guarding the Tokaido road, Nagoya Castle was once one of the largest castles in Japan, famous for the pair of gilded shachihoko (mythical dolphin-tiger) ornaments on its roof. The surrounding Honmaru Palace, a meticulous wooden reconstruction of the original Momoyama-era interiors, is now considered one of the finest palace restorations in the country.
