Daikaku-ji began as Emperor Saga's detached villa in 814 and was later converted into a temple, keeping the villa's pond, Osawa-no-ike, which is one of the oldest artificial garden ponds in Japan. Admission is ¥800 for the main halls, with the pond area ticketed separately at ¥500 and last entry at 4:30 PM. It sits north of the main Arashiyama crowds, about a 19-minute walk from Saga-Arashiyama Station.
Usual hours — confirm with the official site for holidays + seasonal closures.
