Kurokuma Falls

くろくまの滝

Aomori · Tohoku

CLOSED — the access road and trail to Kurokuma Falls have been shut since the heavy-rain disaster of August 2022 and Aomori Prefecture still lists the site as 通行止め, with no reopening announced. An 85-metre cascade on a tributary of the Akaishi River flowing out of the World Heritage Shirakami Mountains, and one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls; its slender, layered flow is said to resemble the figure of Kannon. Even in a normal year the approach is closed from mid-November to late May.

Why it's hidden

Reached only by a short forest trail off a mountain road in Ajigasawa, it is overshadowed by the more famous Shirakami-Sanchi core and sees few foreign visitors.
