Hiroshima Castle

Hiroshima Castle's main keep closed to visitors on 22 March 2026 and cannot be entered — the concrete 1958 tower still stands and photographs beautifully from the moat, but the visit is now grounds, walls and exterior only. What remains open, and free, are the Ninomaru restored buildings: the Omote-gomon gate, Hira-yagura, Tamon-yagura and Taiko-yagura, rebuilt in authentic timber in the early 1990s, where you take off your shoes and walk through gun ports and lattice windows. The wider park is open at all hours, taking in Edo-period stone walls, the moat, Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine, and A-bomb survivor trees beside the bunker that sent the first report of the 1945 bombing. Hiroshima has approved rebuilding the keep group in wood, but with demolition and survey work still ahead the earliest target is fiscal 2049.

The main keep closed 2026-03-22 and its ¥370 admission no longer applies; the Ninomaru restored timber buildings (Omotegomon, Hira-yagura, Tamon-yagura, Taiko-yagura) are enterable at no charge, shoes off, and the grounds are open. Sannomaru History Museum, which takes over the keep's collection, is due to open fully on 2027-10-01.

Note
- It is not gone: the city plans to demolish the 1958 ferroconcrete keep and rebuild the keep group in wood, with an earliest indicative completion of FY2049, and no demolition date is fixed — so the tower still stands and still photographs from the moat.
- The castle grounds, moat, Edo stone walls, Gokoku Shrine and the military HQ bunker ruins remain open.
