One of Japan's most important shrines, founded in 947 to honor the scholar-statesman Sugawara no Michizane, now deified as the god of learning — students nationwide come to pray before exams. Famous for roughly 2,000 plum trees blooming in February (Michizane's favorite flower) and the Momijien, a 350-tree autumn maple garden with evening illuminations in a separate paid section. A lively antiques and flea market fills the grounds every month on the 25th (Tenjin-san), Michizane's memorial day.
