Takase Submersible Bridge Firefly Viewing

高瀬沈下橋のホタル

Kochi · Shikoku

高瀬沈下橋 is a 232.3 m 'submersible bridge' on the Shimanto River, built in 1973 with no side railings so floodwater passes over it rather than tearing it apart — the third-longest of the river's chinkabashi. Fireflies gather along this stretch of the river in late spring, and because the bridge sits away from the busier, more-photographed crossings closer to town, it draws a quieter crowd for viewing than other points on the same river.

Why it's hidden

It is one bridge among several near-identical submersible crossings on the same river, further from town than the ones every guidebook photographs, so the firefly viewing here is a local's tip rather than a listed attraction.
