Kokudo Station

国道駅

Kanagawa · Kanto

国道駅 is a small unstaffed stop on the JR Tsurumi Line in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, and the reason to come is underneath rather than on it. The station opened in 1930 and is carried on a large arched viaduct from that year; the tunnel-like passage running beneath the tracks was once lined with shops and homes and crowded with workers from the coastal industrial belt, and a department store called Rinko Depato traded under the arches when the station opened. The name comes from the crossing with what was then Route 1, now Route 15. A newspaper feature in 2013 described the passage as quiet and largely empty, with time passing slowly under the concrete — the concourse has kept its pre-war fabric while the industry that filled it has gone.

Why it's hidden

It sits two stops from Tsurumi on a line most visitors never take, and the thing worth seeing is a public passage under a railway bridge rather than anything signposted as an attraction.

Admission
No admission — it is a working railway station. You need only a valid ticket or IC card to pass the gates; the arcade beneath the viaduct is a public street and free to walk.

How to get there

Kokudo is the second stop from Tsurumi on the JR Tsurumi Line. The line is short and infrequent compared with the mainline beside it, so check the timetable before setting out.
